We are currently at the beginning of the sixth mass extinction. Unlike the previous five mass extinctions, this time it is not a natural disaster triggering the crisis. The current rapid increase in species extinction is the result of human actions. One of the main causes, alongside the exploitation of biological resources and climate change, is the loss and deterioration of the natural habitats of animals.
Bird-window collisions are the second largest human induced threat to birds worldwide.
Our founding story originated at a glass corridor where many birds suffered from deadly collisions with glass, although the commonly used black-hawk silhouettes were applied on the glass. Other effective visible solutions did not comply with the architectural design of the building: this was the beginning of BirdShades.
Our goal is to offer an evidence-based invisible solution for humans whilst making glass clearly visible to birds to save them from dangerous collisions. Founded by a dedicated team of biologists and material scientists we made sure to successfully develop a product which uses state-of-the-art scientific knowledge to turn it into a functional solution to make glass safe for birds.
Glass is a must-have in the modern building industry, but birds cannot see glass. Due to the rapidly advancing urbanization, cities are expanding, often on the flight routes of numerous bird species. Due to that bird-window collisions have now become the second-largest human-induced threat to birds. To ensure biodiversity for our common future, effective and simple solutions are needed to optimize cities for both, humans and wildlife. BirdShades goal is to take us a step closer to solving the human-wildlife conflict by developing innovative products to protect birds.
